You suspect you may have endometriosis or adenomyosis
Can endometriosis cause bowel obstruction symptoms?
Yes—endometriosis can cause symptoms that feel like a bowel obstruction, especially when disease involves the bowel (most often the rectum or sigmoid colon) or creates significant inflammation and scarring that restricts how the intestine moves. People may describe severe bloating, crampy abdominal pain, constipation, painful bowel movements (often worse around periods), nausea, or even vomiting. Sometimes the bowel is not directly invaded, but pelvic inflammation can still trigger IBS-like bowel distress that can be hard to tell apart by symptoms alone.
A true, complete bowel obstruction from endometriosis is less common, but it can happen—particularly with deep infiltrating disease or dense adhesions that narrow or kink the bowel. Because bowel symptoms can also come from look-alike or coexisting conditions (like IBS, IBD, SIBO, pelvic floor dysfunction, or other pelvic disorders), our approach is to map out the full picture with a detailed history, targeted exam, and thoughtfully interpreted imaging when helpful—without assuming every GI symptom is “just endo.” If you’re having recurrent or escalating obstruction-type symptoms, reach out to our team so we can help clarify what’s driving them and discuss what treatment options (including minimally invasive excision when appropriate) may actually address the cause.
