Mission & Vision
Why we exist and what we are here to accomplish
Our Origin Story
Why "Lotus"?
This institute was born to transform the standard of endometriosis care—combining surgical excellence, incorporating holistic integrative healing, and groundbreaking lab and clinical research. The lotus flower symbolizes and embodies this on multiple levels.
Resilience & Renewal
The lotus flower rises from muddy or murky waters to bloom pure and strong. This mirrors the journey of women with endometriosis: years of pain, infertility, or dismissal, yet the potential to reclaim health and thrive.
Harmony & Balance
To many, the lotus represents harmony of body, mind, and spirit. This reflects our integrative philosophy: surgery at the highest level, combined with holistic support for the whole person.
Transformative
Just as the lotus flower transforms its environment into abeauty, this institute seeks to transform how endometriosis is treated, understood, and researched.
Universal
Lotus transcends geography and medical jargon—universally resonant with patients, colleagues, donors, and researchers alike, without being tied to a single person or place.
The Future We See
Our Vision
To transform the way endometriosis is understood and treated — from a condition often minimized and ignored to one that receives the precision, respect, and innovation it deserves.
In this vision:
Women find answers early, not after years of delay, thereby transitioning from pain to ever-expanding possibilities.
Infertility and subfertility linked to endometriosis are addressed directly with fertility-preserving strategies.
Excision surgery at the highest level becomes standard, not rare.
Research delivers breakthroughs that shorten the path from suffering to healing.
The Future We're Creating
Our Mission
The mission of the Lotus Endometriosis Institute is to stand as the pinnacle of care for endometriosis — a center where expertise, compassion, and innovation meet.
We are committed to:
Delivering world-class surgical treatment for every stage and complexity of disease.
Supporting women who face infertility or subfertility, restoring fertility where possible.
Providing integrative, whole-person care that recognizes endometriosis affects far more than the pelvis.
Advancing the field through research and education, ensuring that progress continues for the next generation of researchers, experts and surgeons.
Defining the Next Level of Care
What Sets Us Apart
The Lotus Endometriosis Institute (LEI) is more than a center of care — it’s a promise of possibility, offering hope, healing, and a new standard in endometriosis treatment. At its helm is Dr. Steve Vasilev, founder, director, and head surgeon. With decades of surgical mastery, deep integrative insight, and a passion for patient-centered innovation, he leads LEI in reshaping what is possible for those suffering with endo.
The Only Quadruple-Board-Certified Endometriosis Surgeon in the U.S.
Dr. Steve Vasilev holds an unmatched distinction as the only physician in the United States to hold board certification in Gynecology, Gynecologic Oncology, Integrative Medicine, and Holistic Medicine, with advanced expertise in robotic surgery. This rare combination ensures every patient receives care that integrates the highest level of surgical precision, evidence-based medical management, and whole-person healing. At our institute, integrative medicine is not just a catchphrase—it is where advanced science and holistic principles genuinely meet.
Surgical Training at the Highest Level
Most excision specialists pursue advanced minimally invasive fellowships, with varying degrees of focus on endometriosis and complex pelvic surgery. Dr. Vasilev, however, trained in an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Gynecologic Oncology—a far more rigorous program than the variable MIGS fellowships typically available. His training provides unmatched skill and full hospital privileges for all pelvic and intra-abdominal surgeries, including those involving the bowel, bladder, diaphragm, liver, spleen, and ureters. Beyond this, his 30+ years of surgical experience further solidify his standing at the highest possible level.
The Only Gynecologic Oncologist Focused on Endometriosis
While gynecologic oncologists often assist with difficult endometriosis cases, Dr. Vasilev stands alone as the only gynecologic oncologist in the U.S. solely dedicated to endometriosis and related tumors. His patients benefit from oncologic-level surgical precision applied to a disease frequently underestimated before surgery.
Expertise in Extreme Cervical and Abdominal-Pelvic Surgery
Worldwide, only a handful of surgeons retain the skill set needed for extremely complex robotic surgery around the cervix, parametria, and deep pelvic tissues. Dr. Vasilev is among this small group, and his published work in complex robotic abdominal surgery—such as ovarian cancer cytoreduction, often more demanding than endometriosis excision—sets him apart. These advanced techniques are critical for fertility-preserving excision and managing ultra-complex Stage IV disease or dense fibrosis, where standard excision is insufficient. Trainees and colleagues consistently attest to his philosophy of preserving organs whenever possible, avoiding unnecessary removal.
No Weak Links in Your Care
Many centers depend on general, gastrointestinal, or urologic surgeons who are not specialists in endometriosis. At Lotus, Dr. Vasilev personally performs all advanced abdominopelvic resections himself. This ensures surgical completeness and safety are never compromised by fragmented or outsourced care.
Educator, Innovator, and Researcher
As a professor who has taught at multiple universities, Dr. Steve Vasilev has trained fellows and residents nationwide in advanced robotic surgery, shaping the next generation of surgeons while continuing to practice at the highest level himself. His leadership extends beyond the operating room into active translational research, including the development of novel biomarkers such as cfmiR for earlier diagnosis and recurrence monitoring. Patients at the Lotus Endometriosis Institute benefit not only from a surgeon who defines the standard of care today, but also from insights that are driving the breakthroughs of tomorrow.
Integrative, Whole-Person Philosophy
Endometriosis is more than just lesions, and that’s why our approach emphasizes the whole person. Dr. Vasilev is trained and certified by several medical accreditation boards in integrative holistic medicine, which combines surgical, medical, and science expertise with evidence-based integrative support — including nutrition, lifestyle, and mind-body medicine — so that every piece of the healing process is addressed.
