Out-of-State Patient Information & California-Based Surgical Care
Lotus Endometriosis Institute is a California-based surgical specialty practice. Many patients contact us from outside California because they are seeking highly specialized evaluation and possible excision surgery for suspected endometriosis, adenomyosis, complex pelvic pain, or related conditions.
This page explains how our process works for patients who live outside California and clarifies the limits of remote communication, records review, and educational consultations before a patient travels to California.
California-Based Specialty Surgical Care
Lotus provides specialized surgical care in California. For patients who live outside California, remote communication before travel is limited to education, administrative intake, records organization, and preliminary review to determine whether an in-person California surgical evaluation may be appropriate.
Remote communication before travel is not a diagnosis, treatment plan, prescription, imaging order, laboratory order, or substitute for care from your local licensed clinician. Lotus does not provide general telemedicine, ongoing remote medical management, urgent care, prescriptions, imaging orders, laboratory orders, or routine gynecologic care for patients while they are located outside California.
How the Out-of-State Patient Process Works
1. Initial Inquiry
Patients from outside California may contact Lotus because they are considering traveling to California for specialized surgical evaluation and possible excision surgery. An inquiry does not establish a diagnosis or treatment relationship in your home state. It is the first step in helping our team understand whether your history appears aligned with the type of complex surgical problems Lotus evaluates in California.
2. Records Intake
You may be asked to provide prior medical records, imaging reports, operative reports, pathology reports, symptom history, treatment history, medication history, and other relevant information. Records intake helps our team understand your prior care and whether your history may warrant consideration for in-person evaluation in California. Submitting records does not confirm or rule out endometriosis, adenomyosis, or any other condition.
3. Preliminary Records Review
Lotus may review the records you provide to determine whether your history appears appropriate for possible California-based surgical evaluation. This preliminary review is not a remote medical diagnosis. It does not replace care from your local physician, gynecologist, primary care clinician, or other licensed healthcare professional where you live. The purpose of this review is to help determine whether traveling to California for an in-person surgical evaluation may be reasonable.
4. Educational Discussion Before Travel
For out-of-state patients, remote conversations before travel are educational and preparatory. These discussions may include general information about:
- The type of California-based surgical evaluation Lotus provides
- What records may be useful for surgical planning
- How advanced endometriosis or adenomyosis surgery is generally approached
- What travel and recovery logistics may involve
- What questions to discuss with your local care team before traveling
These conversations are not telemedicine visits for diagnosis or treatment in your home state. They do not include prescribing medication, ordering imaging, ordering laboratory testing, managing urgent symptoms, or directing medical care outside California.
5. Local Medical Care Before Travel
If you need imaging, laboratory testing, medication, preoperative clearance, symptom control, disability paperwork, urgent evaluation, or other medical care while you are outside California, you should coordinate that care through clinicians licensed where you are located. This may include your primary care physician, gynecologist, local specialist, urgent care center, or emergency department, depending on the situation. Lotus may identify categories of information that are helpful for California surgical planning, but out-of-state medical orders and treatment should be handled by your local licensed care team.
6. Travel to California
If your history appears appropriate for consideration of surgical evaluation, you may choose to travel to California for in-person care. Formal medical evaluation, surgical decision-making, informed consent, treatment, and operative care occur in California.
7. Diagnosis, Surgery, and Pathology
Endometriosis cannot be definitively diagnosed through a website form, records upload, phone call, video conversation, or remote review alone. For many patients, definitive diagnosis requires direct surgical evaluation and pathology when tissue is removed. Before you travel, Lotus may review your records to determine whether your history appears consistent with the type of complex surgical problem we evaluate. That review does not confirm or rule out endometriosis, adenomyosis, or any other condition. When surgery is performed in California, diagnosis and surgical findings are based on the in-person California episode of care, including operative evaluation and pathology when applicable.
8. Immediate Postoperative Recovery in California
Patients traveling from outside California should plan to remain in California for the immediate postoperative recovery period and postoperative assessment before returning home. The recommended length of stay depends on surgical complexity, recovery, travel distance, and clinical judgment. Your team will discuss expected travel and recovery logistics as part of the California-based surgical planning process.
9. Returning Home After Surgery
After returning home, routine and urgent medical care should continue with clinicians licensed where you are located.
Lotus may provide operative records, pathology information, recovery instructions related to the California procedure, and guidance intended to help you coordinate appropriate follow-up with your local clinicians.
Once you are outside California, prescriptions, imaging, laboratory testing, urgent symptoms, routine medical care, and ongoing condition management should be coordinated with your local licensed care team unless otherwise permitted by applicable law.
No Emergency or Urgent Care Through This Website
Lotus does not provide emergency services through this website, email, text messages, portal messages, records upload, phone calls, video conversations, or educational consultations.
If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, signs of infection, sudden worsening symptoms, or any urgent concern, seek immediate care from a local emergency department, urgent care center, or licensed clinician where you are located.
Physician-Patient Relationship
For out-of-state prospective patients, submitting records, completing an inquiry form, communicating with staff, or participating in an educational discussion does not by itself establish a physician-patient relationship for diagnosis or treatment in your home state.
The physician-patient relationship for Lotus’s surgical care is established in California in connection with in-person evaluation, informed consent, and treatment.
Important Patient Acknowledgment
By contacting Lotus from outside California, submitting records, or participating in a remote educational discussion, you acknowledge that pre-arrival communication is limited to education, intake, records organization, and preliminary surgical-fit screening for possible California-based care.
You understand that Lotus does not diagnose, prescribe, order tests, manage urgent symptoms, or provide ongoing treatment while you are located outside California.
You also understand that any medical care needed before traveling to California or after returning home should be coordinated through clinicians licensed where you are located.
