How do I prepare for pelvic imaging, and does cycle timing matter?

Topic:Diagnosis
Affected areas:pelvicabdominal

For a transvaginal ultrasound, we typically recommend arriving with an empty bladder because it can improve visualization and make the exam more comfortable. The scan itself is usually brief, and our team will guide you through what to expect when you check in.

For MRI, preparation is usually minimal and it can be scheduled at most points in the cycle, but timing can matter for interpretation. Early to mid-cycle can help reduce confusion from normal hormone-related thickening that can mimic disease on imaging, and many patients prefer to avoid days of heavy bleeding for comfort and image clarity. If you’re not sure when to book, reach out—our team can help choose timing that fits your cycle and your symptoms.
