Can adenomyosis come back after hysterectomy?
In the usual sense, adenomyosis does not “return” after a hysterectomy that removes the uterus, because adenomyosis is defined by endometrial-like tissue growing within the uterine muscle wall. Once the uterus is removed, there isn’t uterine muscle left for adenomyosis to recur in.
That said, some people still have pelvic pain or other symptoms after hysterectomy, and it can feel like the disease is back. The most common reason is overlapping conditions—especially endometriosis, which can exist outside the uterus and is not cured by removing the uterus alone. If you’re considering hysterectomy for adenomyosis or you’re still symptomatic afterward, our team can help you sort out whether adenomyosis was the main driver, whether endometriosis may be present too, and what a durable surgical plan looks like for your specific anatomy and goals.
