Progestogen-based treatments can cause irregular bleeding or spotting, and some people notice mood changes or acne. Combined hormonal pills are well-tolerated for many, but they carry a rare blood clot risk in people with certain risk factors. GnRH-based medications can affect bone density and may also impact things like mood, so we usually plan these thoughtfully rather than viewing them as “set it and forget it.”

Monitoring depends on the medication and your health history, but our goal is always to balance symptom control with long-term safety—sometimes with add-back therapy and periodic follow-up to protect bone health and overall wellbeing. Many patients can stay on progestogens or a hormonal IUD long term if they’re effective and well-tolerated. GnRH regimens are typically time-limited and closely followed, and we’ll help you map out what makes sense for your symptoms, goals, and next steps—especially if medication is being used to bridge to, or avoid, surgery.
