How is diffuse adenomyosis confirmed on MRI or ultrasound?

Diffuse adenomyosis is usually suggested—not “proven”—by a pattern of findings on pelvic imaging, especially when they match your symptoms. On MRI, we often look for an irregularly thickened junctional zone, low-signal (dark) bands within the muscle of the uterus, and tiny myometrial cysts distributed through the uterine wall.

On transvaginal ultrasound, diffuse adenomyosis may appear as a heterogeneous, streaky (“venetian blind”) myometrium with asymmetric thickening and fan-shaped shadowing. Imaging is interpreted alongside your history and pelvic exam to strengthen diagnostic confidence and to rule out look-alike conditions such as fibroids. If your imaging report is unclear or your symptoms don’t match the conclusions, our team can review your images and help clarify what the findings mean for next steps.
