Will an ovarian cyst come back after cystectomy?

Topic:Surgery
Affected areas:pelvicabdominalsystemic

Some ovarian cysts can come back after surgery, and the risk is higher with endometriomas because they’re tied to endometriosis, a chronic inflammatory disease. What matters most is the underlying “why” the cyst formed—removing the cyst helps, but if endometriosis remains active, new cysts or recurring symptoms are more likely.

Recurrence risk varies based on factors like age, the size and type of cyst, and whether endometriosis elsewhere in the pelvis was identified and treated at the same time. In our practice, we focus on addressing endometriosis comprehensively during surgery and tailoring a long-term plan afterward to reduce the chance of persistent or returning pain. If you’re worried about recurrence, our team can review your imaging, symptoms, and surgical goals and help you decide what approach makes the most sense for you.
