Can medication alone treat deep infiltrating endometriosis?

Topic:Deep Disease
Affected areas:pelvicbowelbladder

Hormonal medications can be very helpful for deep infiltrating endometriosis by suppressing cycling activity and inflammation, which may reduce pain and bleeding-related symptoms. However, medication does not remove deep lesions, fibrosis, or scar-related tethering, and it typically cannot reverse anatomic distortion or narrowing caused by disease.

If deep disease is affecting the bowel, bladder, ureters, nerves, or pelvic support structures—or if symptoms and quality-of-life impacts persist despite medical therapy—surgery is often part of definitive treatment. Our team can help you understand what your imaging, symptoms, and exam suggest about lesion depth and location, and whether a combined plan (medical management with excision when appropriate) makes the most sense for your goals.
