How is endometriosis diagnosed—do I need surgery?

Topic:Diagnosis
Affected areas:pelvicabdominal

Endometriosis diagnosis often starts with your symptom history and a detailed pelvic exam, then is supported by expert imaging. High-quality transvaginal ultrasound and pelvic MRI can sometimes identify ovarian endometriomas and signs of deeper disease, which helps guide next steps and surgical planning when needed.

Surgery is not automatically required just to move forward with care, and many patients begin evidence-based medical management based on a strong clinical and imaging picture. That said, laparoscopy with tissue confirmation is still the gold standard for definitive diagnosis, and it can also allow treatment at the same time. If you’re wondering whether imaging is sufficient in your case or whether surgery would change outcomes, our team can review your symptoms, prior testing, and goals and help you decide on the most appropriate next step.
