You are recovering after treatment
When can I return to work, exercise, and sex after laparoscopy?

Light walking is usually encouraged within the first 24 hours after laparoscopy, and many patients can return to desk-based work in about 1–2 weeks if the surgery was uncomplicated. If your procedure involved more complex work—especially bowel or bladder repair—your timeline may be longer, often several weeks, because your body needs extra time to heal internally.
For exercise, we typically recommend avoiding heavy lifting, high-impact activity, and intense core work until your postoperative clearance, commonly around 4–6 weeks, though this varies based on what was done. Penetrative sex is generally safest to resume once you feel comfortable and we’ve confirmed healing at follow-up; vaginal repairs usually require a longer wait. If you tell our team what type of work you do and how you like to exercise, we can help you plan a return that protects your recovery.
