Right now, menstrual blood tests are not validated or widely available for routine endometriosis diagnosis and should not be used on their own. Diagnosis still relies on symptoms, a detailed history and exam, and targeted imaging when appropriate.
Testing menstrual fluid (menstrual effluent) for cellular material, proteins, or microRNAs is an exciting research direction for identifying endometriosis without surgery. These approaches aim to detect biological signals associated with the disease in material naturally shed during a period.
