You are seeking a diagnosis

Do I need imaging or a colonoscopy for GI symptoms?

Topic:Diagnosis
Affected areas:bowelpelvicabdominal

Imaging can be helpful when GI symptoms are severe, persistent despite treatment, or suggest deeper endometriosis affecting structures near the bowel. Pelvic ultrasound or MRI may identify findings that support a working diagnosis, clarify anatomy, and help our team plan the most appropriate next steps.

A colonoscopy is often normal in endometriosis because most lesions involve the outside of the bowel rather than the inner lining that a scope can see. However, colonoscopy may be appropriate when symptoms raise concern for other gastrointestinal conditions—especially rectal bleeding, unexplained anemia, significant changes in bowel habits, or other red flags. If you’re unsure which test fits your symptoms, we can review your history and decide what will be most informative before moving forward.
