You suspect you may have endometriosis or adenomyosis
How is neuropathic pelvic pain evaluated, and when is it urgent?
Neuropathic pelvic pain is evaluated by listening for classic nerve-type symptoms (burning, shooting, electric, tingling) and then doing a focused exam to “map” where sensation is altered and whether symptoms match a specific nerve distribution. We also assess pelvic floor muscle tone and tenderness, because overactive pelvic floor muscles can both mimic and amplify nerve pain. Imaging isn’t routine for every case, but can be useful when your history and exam suggest a specific structure or region that needs a closer look.
This becomes urgent when nerve function may be changing or when there are red-flag neurologic or systemic symptoms. Reach out immediately if you develop new leg weakness, foot drop, numbness in the saddle area, fever with severe back pain, or you suddenly can’t pass urine or stool. For a non-urgent workup, targeted MRI or ultrasound may be recommended to complement exam findings, and our team can help determine the most appropriate next steps based on your symptom pattern.
