Can imaging confirm endometriosis?
Imaging can be very helpful, but it usually can’t confirm endometriosis on its own. Ultrasound or MRI may strongly suggest disease when they show findings like endometriomas (ovarian cysts related to endometriosis) or deep infiltrating lesions.
However, many endometriosis lesions are superficial, small, or microscopic and won’t show up on scans even when symptoms are significant. A “normal” ultrasound or MRI doesn’t rule out endometriosis, and an abnormal scan is best interpreted in the context of your symptoms and exam. If you’re trying to understand what your imaging results mean for your next steps, our team can review your records and help you decide on the most effective path forward.
