What labs are needed before laparoscopic surgery?

Topic:Surgery
Affected areas:pelvicabdominal

Pre-op labs for laparoscopic (including robotic) surgery aren’t one-size-fits-all—they’re chosen based on your health history, medications, and what we’re planning to do in surgery. Commonly, our team orders a complete blood count to check hemoglobin/platelets, and a pregnancy test for patients who could be pregnant. Depending on your risks and expected blood loss, we may also order blood type and screen (so blood is available if ever needed).

Additional labs are individualized. If you have kidney or liver concerns, are on certain medications, have anemia, bleeding/bruising history, diabetes, thyroid disease, or we’re planning more complex excision (for example, bowel, bladder, or upper abdominal work), we may add tests like electrolytes/renal function, glucose or A1c, coagulation studies, or other targeted labs. Once we review your history and surgical plan, we’ll tell you exactly which labs we need, when to get them, and how they fit into a safe, well-prepared surgery.
