You suspect you may have endometriosis or adenomyosis
Why do tampons hurt with a light period?
Tampons can hurt even with a light flow because the issue is often friction and sensitivity—not the amount of bleeding. When there isn’t much fluid to lubricate the vaginal canal, insertion and removal can tug on dry, irritated tissue and feel sharp or “raw.” Pain can also come from pelvic floor muscle overactivity: the muscles around the vagina may tighten protectively (sometimes after months or years of pelvic pain), making anything inserted feel uncomfortable or even impossible.
In our experience, tampon pain can also be a clue that something deeper is driving pelvic sensitivity, such as endometriosis, adenomyosis, or overlapping pain conditions that heighten nerve signaling across the pelvis. That heightened sensitivity can show up as pain with tampons, pelvic exams, or intercourse—even when the bleeding is light. If this sounds familiar, our team can help you sort out whether the driver is muscular (pelvic floor dysfunction), inflammatory disease, nerve sensitization, or a combination, and guide you toward targeted options like a whole-picture evaluation and, when appropriate, pelvic floor therapy.
