What are nerve blocks, and when are they used?

Topic:Symptoms
Affected areas:pelvicbackleg

Nerve blocks are image-guided injections that deliver medication near specific pelvic nerves—such as the pudendal nerve or the superior hypogastric plexus—to calm inflammation and interrupt pain signaling. Depending on the situation, they may be used as a diagnostic tool (to see whether a particular nerve is driving symptoms) and/or as a therapeutic option to reduce pain.

We most often consider nerve blocks when symptoms persist despite more conservative approaches, or when we’re trying to pinpoint the source of nerve-related pelvic pain to guide next steps. Relief is sometimes temporary and may be done as a short series, but even short-term improvement can create a window to rebuild function with pelvic floor physical therapy and careful pacing. If you’re dealing with burning, shooting, or electric-type pelvic pain, our team can help evaluate whether a nerve block could be useful in your overall treatment plan.
